Business Model Adoption

Marketing Agency Joins t he B Corp Movement

To B or Not to B. There was no question says Curt Hammond

The team at Pearl Street Communications Inc. got a very special holiday present this year when they re ceived notice in December they had officially been recognized as a Certified B Corporation. “This is a big day for our team,” commented Chief Listening Officer and company president , Curt Hammond. “As a Certified B Corporation, we are making a very public statement that we want to grow a great company but not at the expense of our team, community or planet. We believe that business can be a force of good and we want to work with the other 2500 B Corps around the planet to prove it.”

Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions, not only on their shareholders, but also on their stake holders, including their team, suppliers, community, consumers, and the environment. To become a certified B Corp, a company must go through a rigorous online assessment followed up with a series of calls and deta iled reviews of company records and policies. Companies are re - certified every two years and are encouraged to continuously look for new ways to grow through the five evaluation criteria: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. “We are excited to see Pearl Street as a Certified B Corporation and are not surprised at all by th eir achievement,” commented Christine Oldfield, Executive Director at the People and Information Network (PIN). “Pearl Street has been a longtime supporter of our wo rk and many non - profits in Guelph/Wellington. They are excellent at what they do and are always looking at ways to build community through their work.”

As part of its B Corp commitment, Pearl Street donates 10% of its time to in - kind work with local organ izations and start - up businesses. A recognized community leader through its community work on dozens of community projects, Pearl Street has put its creative talents behind many local initiatives.

One of these initiatives is the Oak Tree Project co - founded by Will Mactaggart from the local Richardson GMP office. “Team Pearl Street has supported the Oak Tree P roject since its inception and we are better for it. We have counted on their strategic thinking, their social media savv iness a nd their great writing skills. Pearl Street is one of those companies that, in addition to being great at their work , is committed to building strong and lasting relationships.”

Pearl Street has also heavily supported the local Circles program, strongly a dvocated for the local Living Wage Movement and, just this fall, launched a website and back - end portal for the Executive Directors Peer Group of Guelph/Wellington. “We really enjoy working with Pearl Street and appreciate all of the energy and creativit y they bring to our team,” reflected Tamara Nugent Director of Education for the Wellington Catholic District School Board. “Their B Corp Certification seems like a very natural step for their growth. While never losing sight of our needs, they are always looking at new and creative ways to help us build stronger relationships with the community. We value and benefit from their bold approach to storytelling.”
