Industry leader Martha George will be honoured at 2017 Golf Classic

Martha George, president of the Grand Valley Construction Association (GVCA), will be honoured at Conestoga’s 22nd annual Golf Classic on May 30. The event recognizes community and business leaders while raising funds for redevelopment projects at the college.

George has been a long-time supporter of the Conestoga community and served multiple terms on the college’s Board of Governors. She maintains an ongoing interest and active involvement in Conestoga’s skilled trades and apprenticeship programs and dedicates time to connect with students and employees through numerous guest speaker appearances and participation in various college initiatives.

As a business leader George has become a tireless advocate and champion for the construction industry. She was appointed GVCA president in 2005 and prior to that served as the association’s Board chair. She has also served as vice president of George Masonry Ltd. and is a Gold Seal Certified estimator.

GVCA provides educational and networking opportunities for its more than 600 members who work in the non-residential construction industry in communities throughout southwestern Ontario. In her role with GVCA George has been credited with promoting excellence in the construction industry, at both the provincial and national levels, and developing mentoring programs to connect women and younger association members to the industry.

George also serves the community through her involvement on various advisory boards and associations including the Canadian Construction Association, the Council of Ontario Construction Associations, the Waterloo Region Economic Development Corporation, the Editorial Advisory Council for the Daily Commercial News and the Board of Governors for the University of Waterloo.

In 2012, she was honoured with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for the significant contributions she has made to the construction industry in Canada.

Conestoga’s Golf Classic launched in 1996 and has become one of the region’s premier sporting events. Thanks to the ongoing support of its participants, the Golf Classic has honoured numerous community and business leaders and raised more than $1 million for redevelopment projects at the college.

The 2017 Golf Classic will take place on May 30 at Whistle Bear Golf Club.
