Taste Local! Taste Fresh! – A Feast for the Senses!

For everything there is a season and this happens to be the season of local food and harvest events. It is also the season for Foodlink’s Culinary Showcase and Fundraiser Taste Local! Taste Fresh! This year the annual event brings together 17 area chefs and over 20 farmers and producers from Waterloo Region. It all takes place Sunday, September 10, 2-5 pm at Steckle Heritage Farm in Kitchener.

Taste Local will truly be a feast for the senses as guests sample original food creations showcasing local foods and farm-fresh products prepared by the chef-farmer teams. Upon arrival, each guest will select a hand-crafted pottery plate created by the Waterloo Potter’s Workshop onto which the various food items will be served. Folks are encouraged to chat with both the chefs and farmers to learn more about how the local foods were grown and prepared. To add to the ambiance, guests will be treated to lively Gypsy jazz music of Juneyt and will have an opportunity to bid on fabulous silent auction packages while sampling Pelee Island Wines and Block Three Brews. Everyone will receive a “passport” that will be stamped at the various food stations.

Each year, the event welcomes both new and returning partners. Long-time chef Derek Hines of Boutique Catering has been paired with Pfenning’s Organic Farm this year. Inspired by a belief that good food should tell a story, the pair will be offering up a unique dish that pays tribute to Island food. Because Pfenning’s employs migrant workers from Jamaica, the family has become very familiar with and grown very fond of Island fare. “Our Taste Local dish of Organic Kale and Field greens Callaloo with Sweet Potato Doubles will honour the farm workers and their sacrifice”, explains Derek. (In case you are wondering, “doubles” are a street food from Trinidad, rather like a fried pita snack food).

The event takes place on picturesque grounds of Steckle Farm, a heritage designated property and working farm right in the City of Kitchener! Much of the activity will take place within a breathtaking post-and-beam style barn dating back to 1840 but guests will also be able to visit the animals, vegetable gardens and spectacular sunflower field.

Taste Local! Taste Fresh! is about bringing together all of the links in the food chain--farmers, distributors, retailers, chefs and consumers--to celebrate our local harvest and the diversity of great food we have here in Waterloo Region. The event is also Foodlink’s only fundraiser, with proceeds going towards the organization’s mission to promote food localism.

Be sure to get your tickets for Taste Local! Taste Fresh! while quantities last. A special early bird price as well as book-of-10 offer is currently in effect. The price includes all tastings and an exquisite one-of-a kind hand-crafted pottery plate. Tickets and further info available here.
