United Nations World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
June 15 has been designated by the United Nations as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This day brings awareness to the abuse and suffering experienced by some of our older generations.
In Waterloo, this day is being recognized by the Elder Abuse Prevention Council and the Age-friendly Waterloo Multi-Agency Committee who are co-hosting a free lunch and learn. The lunch is themed around the importance of inclusion for elder abuse prevention.
Guest speakers include Jean Becker, Senior Advisor: Aboriginal Initiatives, Wilfrid Laurier University and Kathy Hogarth, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, Renison University College, University of Waterloo.
Mayor Dave Jaworsky will be present for the session and says, “I encourage residents to join us for this event. Let’s honour our elderly citizens not only on this day, but every day and recognize the important contribution they make to a culturally rich and inclusive community.”
